The University of Hertfordshire invites applications for two full-time doctoral studentships, as part of an AHRC funded three-year research project running at the University of Hertfordshire under the leadership of Professor Paul Coates, to study the nature of phenomenal qualities.

The studentships are for three years full-time study, fully funded at the current AHRC rate of £12,940 per annum, plus fees, starting on October 1st 2009.

The Project focuses upon the cognitive role and ontological nature of phenomenal qualities, and in particular upon their relation to the physical world. It will examine both the “objective” and the “subjective” dimensions of phenomenal qualities as they occur in experiences. One branch of the Project concerns the role that phenomenal qualities play in perception: it will investigate whether they are best understood as intrinsic properties of inner experiences, or alternatively, should be construed as the manifest properties of perceived objects. The second branch of the Project concerns the metaphysics of phenomenal qualities and the philosophy of mind: in particular, it will involve an investigation of the prospects for integrating such qualities within a broadly physicalistic worldview (each branch will be broadly construed, and we accept that there may be some overlap between the areas of investigation).

The Project is a large and ambitious one, involving a worldwide network of leading researchers in philosophy of mind/perception, and will include a high-profile lecture series, seminars, and two workshops, leading up to a major international conference on phenomenal qualities in 2011/12. Successful applicants, therefore, can look forward to being part of a rich and vibrant research community, at the cutting-edge of its discipline.

We seek one PhD student to study full-time within the first branch identified above, on a topic connected with phenomenal qualities and perception, and a second PhD student to study full-time on the topic of phenomenal qualities as this relates to issues in metaphysics and the philosophy of mind. They will be supervised by Professor Coates and by Dr Coleman respectively. Professors Shaun Gallagher and Anthony Marcel will also be on the supervision teams.

Requirements:

Successful applicants will normally be expected to have a 1st class or good Upper 2nd class Honours degree in Philosophy, and also a Masters degree in Philosophy (or be approaching completion of a Masters degree), or the equivalent. Applicants must meet the Residence Eligibility conditions for AHRC awards. They will be expected to play an active role within the research activities organised in the Project.

Applications should include a CV, references from two academic referees, and a summary of your research proposal (max. 500 words). For application forms and details of how to apply please contact:

j.1.turner@herts.ac.uk, or write to Janice Turner, Phenomenal Qualities Project, SSAHRI, University of Hertfordshire, College Lane, AL10 9AB.

For further information about the Studentships you are advised to contact either Paul Coates (P.Coates@herts.ac.uk) or Sam Coleman (S.Coleman@herts.ac.uk). Information about the AHRC funded Project, The Nature of Phenomenal Qualities, is available at: www.paulcoates.net.

Closing Date: 17th April 2009

The Netherlands Ministry for Development Cooperation’s Master’s and Doctoral scholarships in Sustainable Poverty Reduction

The opportunity Students from Asian developing nations are offered the opportunity to pursue their master’s or doctoral studies in fields relating to sustainable poverty reduction at one of Asia ’s leading postgraduate institutions.

The scholarships The Netherlands Ministry for Development Cooperation and the Asian Institute of Technology have partnered to offer a program called “Human Resource Development for Asian Partner Countries” from October 2006 to December 2009. Master’s and doctoral scholarships will be provided to students from seven partner countries of the Netherlands in Asia, i.e., Afghanistan , Bangladesh , Indonesia , Mongolia , Pakistan , Sri Lanka and Vietnam . The scholarships cover the costs of degree programs in fields relevant to sustainable development, environmental protection and the promotion of gender equity. The three focal areas are water engineering and management, rural development and sustainable use of natural resources, and urban environmental management.

Water engineering and management includes waterways and coastal engineering, irrigation engineering, water resources and water supply drainage. Expertise areas also include water transport, flood control, beach protection, erosion, water supply and wastewater collection and sewerage treatment systems, and integrated watershed development management.

Rural development and sustainable use of natural resources addresses rural development and the need to consider economic productivity versus the necessity to conserve rural areas. In AIT many programs aim to contribute to technology to stimulate rural developments including agricultural and food engineering, bioprocess technology, aquaculture and aquatic resources management, pulp and paper technology, natural resources management, as well as regional and rural development planning.

Urban environmental management addresses the sustainable development of urbanized areas as many of the partner countries are facing rapid urbanization. Thus, the concerns should address urban economy and living environment, conservation of urban natural environments and greening, prevention of environmental deterioration, impacts of urbanization, urban transportation, urban affordable sanitation and sewage treatment. Urban environmental management focuses on the utilization of human and other resources to improve and maintain the quality of urban areas.

Master program in International Relations and European Studies which will take place in Koszeg, Hungary. www.european-studies.hu

Institute for Social and European Studies (ISES) in collaboration with Budapest Corvinus University (the degree issuing institution) is providing students with the opportunity to obtain theoretical and practical knowledge in the fields of international relations, problems of small states in Europe, the Balkans, international economics, regional integration and development, political science, European culture and sociology.

Why to study International and European Studies?

§ You will gain useful knowledge about the EU and Central-Eastern Europe in the context of economic and cultural integration, what can be useful for decision-making, policies and programmes at the national and EU level.
§ A large part of the development cooperation budget of EU member states is channeled through the EU’s various development programmes.
§ The EU affects prospects for development through regional and global development, access to its own markets and through the impact of its policies.
§ The EU is spending the largest amount on regional development in the world.
§ It is intended for people who are making, or who have the potential to make, a significant contribution to the non-governmental sector in the developing world as analysts, policy-makers, researchers or practitioners.
§ Major changes in global economic and political systems are occurring since the fall of the Soviet Union. Managers and planners of local development need the skills to consider global changes as well as local continuities. We find that changing economies prompt changes in social services and local development initiatives and so there is the need to acquire the skills necessary to play a key part in these developments.

§ There is heightened national and international interest in and concern with international and local issues

§ In recent years, multi-lateral and bi-lateral donors have increasingly worked to influence development debates and to share information about their policies and activities; through websites, publications, video and inter-active multi-media. Non-governmental organizations have also become more sophisticated in using a range of media and communication strategies to lobby governments and multilateral bodies, to inform supporters and to build alliances and networks. As a result the demand for staff with skills in International and European Studies, allied to an understanding of international development issues, has increased offering a range of career opportunities for graduates of this programme.
Job opportunites include:

research positions
policy positions: preparing and coordinating policy, advising and planning in local and international development cooperation;
implementing      functions: local project managers and staff;
PR positions relating to cultural and economical development issues.
This programme should be of special interest to the following people:

· Economics, political and social science graduates, especially those who wish to specialize in the field of Central-Eastern European issues in theory and practice.
· Those with work experience in the developing world, wishing to expand their knowledge of the role of the EU in international, regional and national issues.
· Government officials and non-governmental practitioners interested in working in or with the EU on regional and cultural development cooperation issues.
· State officials and non-governmental practitioners who wish to deepen their understanding of debates surrounding the role of the EU in a global context.
The Institute for Social and European Studies offers a variety of programmes and services during the academic year, which will make your stay in Hungary a rewarding and enriching experience. You will be part of an international student body of approximately 30 students and have the opportunity to meet outstanding professors from around the world. Credits are transferable to most universities.
Courses in English include:

International Economic Organizations and Institutions
Change in the Theory and Practice of International Relations, Changing European Values, Philosophy, Psychology and Power
Regional Economics: Europe vs. Global
EU Diplomacy: From Theory to Actor
Comparative Study of Communism, Fascism, and Fundamentalism
Global Governance and Global Civil Society
Security, Peace and Democratization in the Balkans
History of European Integration
The Role of New Europe in the EU (Foreign Policy of the EU)
The EU Integration Policies: The EU and World Development
