The University of Hertfordshire invites applications for two full-time doctoral studentships, as part of an AHRC funded three-year research project running at the University of Hertfordshire under the leadership of Professor Paul Coates, to study the nature of phenomenal qualities.

The studentships are for three years full-time study, fully funded at the current AHRC rate of £12,940 per annum, plus fees, starting on October 1st 2009.

The Project focuses upon the cognitive role and ontological nature of phenomenal qualities, and in particular upon their relation to the physical world. It will examine both the “objective” and the “subjective” dimensions of phenomenal qualities as they occur in experiences. One branch of the Project concerns the role that phenomenal qualities play in perception: it will investigate whether they are best understood as intrinsic properties of inner experiences, or alternatively, should be construed as the manifest properties of perceived objects. The second branch of the Project concerns the metaphysics of phenomenal qualities and the philosophy of mind: in particular, it will involve an investigation of the prospects for integrating such qualities within a broadly physicalistic worldview (each branch will be broadly construed, and we accept that there may be some overlap between the areas of investigation).

The Project is a large and ambitious one, involving a worldwide network of leading researchers in philosophy of mind/perception, and will include a high-profile lecture series, seminars, and two workshops, leading up to a major international conference on phenomenal qualities in 2011/12. Successful applicants, therefore, can look forward to being part of a rich and vibrant research community, at the cutting-edge of its discipline.

We seek one PhD student to study full-time within the first branch identified above, on a topic connected with phenomenal qualities and perception, and a second PhD student to study full-time on the topic of phenomenal qualities as this relates to issues in metaphysics and the philosophy of mind. They will be supervised by Professor Coates and by Dr Coleman respectively. Professors Shaun Gallagher and Anthony Marcel will also be on the supervision teams.

Requirements:

Successful applicants will normally be expected to have a 1st class or good Upper 2nd class Honours degree in Philosophy, and also a Masters degree in Philosophy (or be approaching completion of a Masters degree), or the equivalent. Applicants must meet the Residence Eligibility conditions for AHRC awards. They will be expected to play an active role within the research activities organised in the Project.

Applications should include a CV, references from two academic referees, and a summary of your research proposal (max. 500 words). For application forms and details of how to apply please contact:

j.1.turner@herts.ac.uk, or write to Janice Turner, Phenomenal Qualities Project, SSAHRI, University of Hertfordshire, College Lane, AL10 9AB.

For further information about the Studentships you are advised to contact either Paul Coates (P.Coates@herts.ac.uk) or Sam Coleman (S.Coleman@herts.ac.uk). Information about the AHRC funded Project, The Nature of Phenomenal Qualities, is available at: www.paulcoates.net.

Closing Date: 17th April 2009

at the Department of Mathematics.

The position is part of the project “Geological Storage of CO2:
Mathematical Modelling and Risk Assessment”, a joint effort of the
University of Bergen and SINTEF Applied Mathematics, Oslo. The project
aims at strengthening the scientific understanding of the risks
associated with storage of CO2 for the purpose of reducing atmospheric
emissions. The investigations are related to the study of non-linear
partial differential equations arising from the multi-phase flow in
porous media. Methods from Scientific Computing will be applied, i.e.
the investigations will involve mathematical and numerical models,
numerical simulations and their physical and mathematical
interpretation.

The candidate is expected to work in the multidisciplinary environment
of the project (applied mathematics, computational science and
engineering). The candidate is expected to spend 3 to 6 months abroad
collaborating with international partners.

Applicants must hold a master’s degree in mathematics, physics or a
similar education, or have submitted their master thesis for
assessment by the application deadline. It is a prerequisite, however,
that the examination results are out within 4 weeks of the closing
date for submitting the master thesis.

For more information on the position please contact
Helge K. Dahle, +47-555 84856, helge.dahle@mi.uib.no
Jan M. Nordbotten, jan.nordbotten@mi.uib.no.

The research fellow must take part in the University’s approved PhD
programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. Hence,
applicants must meet the formal admission requirements for the PhD
programme. Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a
project plan outline for the training module, will be worked out in
collaboration with the actual research group.

In total, the fellowship period is 3 years. The fellowship may be
reduced if the successful applicant has held previous employment as a
research fellow.

Starting salaries at salary level 43 (code 1017) on the government
salary scale (currently NOK 325 800 per year); following ordinary
meriting regulations (wage levels 43/47). From the gross wage a 2 %
law-enforced membership fee in the State Pension Fund (”Statens
Pensjonskasse”) is deducted.

The University of Bergen wishes to attain a more equal gender
distribution for academic positions. Female candidates are thus
strongly encouraged to apply. If several applicants are equally
qualified for the position, the internal rules for gender quotas for
academic positions will be applied.

State employment shall reflect the multiplicity of the population at
large to the highest possible degree. The University of Bergen has
therefore adopted a personnel policy objective to ensure that we
achieve a balanced age and sex composition and the recruitment of
persons of various ethnic backgrounds. Persons
of different ethnic backgrounds are therefore encouraged to apply for
the position.

The University of Bergen applies the principles of public openness
when recruiting staff to scientific positions.

The successful applicant must comply with the guidelines that apply to
the position at any time.

The application must include a complete overview of education and
professional activities (CV), scanned copies of diplomas and
transcripts, publications, a list of publications and other scientific
works, and contact details of two or three referees.

Applications should be sent to post@cipr.uib.no

The Netherlands Ministry for Development Cooperation’s Master’s and Doctoral scholarships in Sustainable Poverty Reduction

The opportunity Students from Asian developing nations are offered the opportunity to pursue their master’s or doctoral studies in fields relating to sustainable poverty reduction at one of Asia ’s leading postgraduate institutions.

The scholarships The Netherlands Ministry for Development Cooperation and the Asian Institute of Technology have partnered to offer a program called “Human Resource Development for Asian Partner Countries” from October 2006 to December 2009. Master’s and doctoral scholarships will be provided to students from seven partner countries of the Netherlands in Asia, i.e., Afghanistan , Bangladesh , Indonesia , Mongolia , Pakistan , Sri Lanka and Vietnam . The scholarships cover the costs of degree programs in fields relevant to sustainable development, environmental protection and the promotion of gender equity. The three focal areas are water engineering and management, rural development and sustainable use of natural resources, and urban environmental management.

Water engineering and management includes waterways and coastal engineering, irrigation engineering, water resources and water supply drainage. Expertise areas also include water transport, flood control, beach protection, erosion, water supply and wastewater collection and sewerage treatment systems, and integrated watershed development management.

Rural development and sustainable use of natural resources addresses rural development and the need to consider economic productivity versus the necessity to conserve rural areas. In AIT many programs aim to contribute to technology to stimulate rural developments including agricultural and food engineering, bioprocess technology, aquaculture and aquatic resources management, pulp and paper technology, natural resources management, as well as regional and rural development planning.

Urban environmental management addresses the sustainable development of urbanized areas as many of the partner countries are facing rapid urbanization. Thus, the concerns should address urban economy and living environment, conservation of urban natural environments and greening, prevention of environmental deterioration, impacts of urbanization, urban transportation, urban affordable sanitation and sewage treatment. Urban environmental management focuses on the utilization of human and other resources to improve and maintain the quality of urban areas.
